Our criteria?
First, the house had to have been featured in Log Home Design in 2006. Once that requirement was met, here's what we looked for: Excellent log bones, of course; outstanding floorplan design; a unique use of mixed materials (think stone, copper, a variety of wood species); and visual appeal inside and out.
Why this home?
Take one glance at the Martin Residence and it's easy to see why. This house is 3,200 square feet of log home perfection. From the hand-hewn cedar walls to the floorplan's smart use of space to the custom metalwork and attention to detail, this house has it all covered.
What kind of reaction has Caribou received since this home appeared in Log Home Design?
"We've gotten an amazing response," says Jeff Patterson, general manager at Caribou Creek Log Homes. "What people are most enamored with are the details in this home. You wouldn't believe the number of calls we've received asking for the flooring or the stone or the tile. It represents the quality of work we do very well."
1. Living Room: A Rumford fireplace framed by a custom copper pinecone surround is the focal point of the living room. Built-ins flank the hearth and show off treasured books and memorabilia. Though many log homes feature vaulted ceilings in this space, the owners kept the ceiling height low for a snug atmosphere-a feeling furthered by soft recessed lighting and shed-antler sconces.
2. Kitchen: With a nod to Scandinavian design, which melds sleek, modern style with rustic sensibility, the kitchen boasts a generous slate-tile backsplash in tones of cream, tan and gray. The sizeable center island has a green cabinetry-style base topped with hand-pegged hickory, and there's 200-year-old hand-planed, wide-plank hickory flooring underfoot.
3. Guest Room: Though small in size, the second-story guest bedroom is more than comfortable, thanks to a vaulted ceiling and smart use of space. With saffron-yellow paint complementing the timber rafters, this well-appointed room is sure to put overnight guests at ease. A second bedroom-almost a mirror image of this one-shares the second floor.
4. Exterior: Great landscaping and an onslaught of curb appeal are vital to the overall success of a home. Here, the chinked, hand-hewn log walls, cedar log columns and stacked Montana Bronze stone form the home's impressive entryway. The broad timber-accented gable serves two purposes-from the outside it adds character, but inside it expands usable living space on the upper level.
