Andersen Log Homes Company specializes in building handcrafted, custom log homes, cabins and commercial structures. Our method of contruction reflects that of the pioneer log home builders of British Columbia. We carry on the tradition of the interlocking V-Joint notch, sometimes referred to as the “Norwegian Notch.” We have architects that will help you design your log home, and who will go to your building site and provide a site evaluation.
Jon Andersen, owner, has been building log homes for 24 years and he personally hand selects each tree for each home. Once the logs are harvested and on our building site, they are de-barked and air-dried for roughly six months before they are used in a log structure. Most of the log homes we build are built with white or red pine, which is locally harvested, with diameters ranging from 12 to 28 inches, with a 10-inch top minimum. We also build with standing dead lodgepole pine, western white pine, cedar and Engelmann spruce.
Each log is hand peeled with drawknives, and then is hand scribed and custom fitted to the log beneath it. The log shell is pre-built on our building site, and then it is tagged, disassembled onto trailers, and then reassembled with our crew on the home owner’s site. Fiberglass insulation is put between each log and each notched corner when they are reassembled on the home owner’s site, and most of the door and window openings are cut out after it has been reassembled. Caulking is not necessary on our homes, and they will stay weathertight.
All of our log building features include all door and window openings cut out and keywayed, ready for installation and all log walls are secured by drift pins. We include log ridgepoles, purlins, log posts and archways. Optional features include log stairs, handrails, loft floor joist systems and bolted log trusses.
We offer a log shell package, a finished log shell or a fully finished turn-key home in association with our recommended general contractors. For those who prefer to contract their own home, we can recommend experienced log home subcontractors.
Andersen Log Homes Company is a member of the Great Lakes Log Crafters Association, the International Builders’ Association and the Better Business Bureau. Our model home in Walker, Minnesota is available to tour, and we gladly send out literature and customer references upon request.
