People are often curious about the homes of their log home builder. One assumption is that they’ll be the ultimate showplaces. More often, however, a different ethic prevails. Such is the case with this appealingly modest custom home. Its owner was a scientist for about a decade, but after he built a log home in Virginia, he discovered that building was his passion.

When he and his wife, also a scientist, moved to North Carolina, he started building log and timber-frame homes for a living. His goal for this home was to live in a unique environment that transcends warmth and coziness at the same time, and to use it as a model home for his company.

Built in 2008 on a wooded site with a 20-degree slope, the home features 8-inch round-on-round white pine logs, milled to a double tongue-and-groove profile. It includes a heavy timber roof system.

Stone forms the deck-post supports, facing for the basement exterior and the two-story chimney. Inside, drywall coordinates with the logs walls. The layout provides for a roomy master suite occupying one-third of the main level. The remaining space encompasses a great room and an office. The wraparound porch and deck includes a screened-in section.

Three bedrooms and a loft are on the upper level. The basement houses a spacious rec room, an exercise room, storage and the garage.
