A house, be it log or conventional, is simply an envelope for the love of the people who live there, and love is what makes it a home. The same four walls can be a warm and inviting place for one family, and yet have an entirely different feel for another family. My dream home is a log home that welcomes all the generations of our family, and always has room for one more...because families can always move over and make room!

After nearly 30 years in the military, I have an eclectic collection of furniture, memorabilia, art, and seasonal decorations--and friends. My new log home will quickly become "Alaska central" for family and friends visiting, which combined with being surrounded by all those reminders of wonderful and shared experiences will make it truly home.

Memories are what make a home....baby's first steps, long talks over morning coffee, family pets, sometimes even disasterous holidays, all add up to make a house a home. When you first move in, it's a house, but you start creating memories that first time you can't find the toilet paper, or when your better half makes that spectacular dive, saving your grandmother's favorite bowl. As long as it's inviting, it will become yours through and through.

What makes a house a home, is waking up in the morning to the sound of children arguing and fighting knowing it is not a dream anymore. As you take a nice deep refreshing breath, you notice the fighting does not bother you as much. In a home, you enjoy cleaning all the little messes like spilled milk. A home is realizing that one little memory is worth far more than all the hardship your family has to endure to make your dreams come true. A home is a house that you never want to leave.
