The Woods in Your Backyard: Learning to Create and Enhance Natural Areas Around Your Home

Every once in a while, a little tome drops onto your desk that makes you smile. In this case, the book is a spiral-bound, unassuming research overview for those who live on 1 to 10 acres. The authors outline easy ways to identify the trees and shrubs on your property, discuss the recreational potential of your acreage and provide detailed instructions for land management (think firewood cutting, stream protection, trail and road maintenance, and timber-stand improvement). Once you’ve purchased your slice of paradise, figuring out where the new home goes is merely part of the dream—now fully appreciate how to live on the land and nurture its bounty.

The NRAES, which is the cooperative extension of 14 universities (from Cornell to Virginia Tech), offers this booklet via its web site at nraes.org. You also can call 607-255-7654 to order copies.
