| Use Sustainable Materials Green Building Tips Building with logs is a key component to your earth-friendly abode. Up the green quotient even further by using logs that have been sustainably harvested. Many foresters will earmark a certain number of trees in a forest to be cut down each year. Once one section of the forest is used, foresters replant those trees and move on to the next section scheduled to be cut. This rotation not only replenishes the supply of available logs, it prevents soil erosion and allows animals to remain in their natural habitat because the trees are not all being cut at once. Ask log producers you’re considering where they get their logs. It’s worth noting, however, that while sustainably harvested logs are always a good thing, if you have to ship them 3,000 miles across the country on a truck, you’re defeating the purpose. So consider using local builders who have access to local materials. In addition to saving money on shipping costs, you’ll support local businesses, and your home will look much more natural in its setting.
