Staining Your Log Home 101
Log homes need staining for preservation and beauty. It's a fundamental part of owning a wood structure. Many of toady’s stains have a two-coat system that continue the preservation process. The pigmented stain provides UV protection while the top coat provides water repellency. These coats also enhance the color and beauty of wood and need to be kept in good working order to prevent degradation of your home.
Stain. Staining is the most visible part of the process. Stain has pigments added to the base formula and gives your logs the natural highlights and protection you want for your home. Color in your stain is necessary to prevent the sun’s damaging UV rays from penetrating the surface and drying out the wood fibers.
Technology has given finishing companies new options that were not available even a few years ago: breathable and elastic latex, long-lasting color, high coverage rates per can, fast-drying materials, and safe formulas for the environment.
When choosing the color or pigment of your stain, remember that the species of wood, application techniques, and other factors will affect the actual color when finished. Try a sample of stain on an inconspicuous place on your home to see what the final outcome will be; many companies will also supply you with samples to take home.
Stain is best applied when the outside temperature is between 50-90 degrees. A surface that is too hot or too cold will not allow proper adhesion and could change the chemical reactions that take place during the drying time. Keeping the cans of stain properly mixed while working throughout the day will keep the pigments from concentrating at the bottom of the can. Also, keep cans of stain out of direct sunlight as they can heat up quickly and go beyond the recommended temperature limit.
