Beautiful at all times of year, the home is especially suited to the holiday season with deep snow and festive decorations.
![]() |
Before the renovation, the home had no intimate outdoor spaces like this one near the front door. Bick and Bonnie added new porch and deck areas that function as outdoor living rooms.

The log construction, now stained dark brown, is appropriately married to fieldstone for a house that seems to grow out of the rugged landscape.

Bonnie expresses gratitude for inherited pieces that perfectly furnish the family's home. Gracing the guest bedroom, for example, is a Hudson's Bay blanket that once belonged to Bick's grandfather.

The original builder cut the chord of the open-beam truss system and inserted black steel tie rods to keep the log from interrupting the view through the expansive living room windows.

Although the rest of the original ski lodge wasn't designed for family living, the kitchen was already perfect. Bonnie found the slate flooring and granite counters to her liking.

The master bedroom boasts a rustic tall-post bed that fits in perfectly with the wall and truss logs. Bonnie loves how well the log construction blends with her mother-in-law's traditional furniture to create a style that is comfortable and informal.

The majestic setting drew the Smiths to the site and inspired their vision for a home that takes full advantage of the jaw-dropping view.

The fire pit is a favorite spot for the Smith's teenage son, Bentley, who likes to entertain his friends here while surveying the world below.

A plastic Jacuzzi and drywall in the master bathroom were some of Caroline Hickerson's few concessions to manmade materials in a home that boasts mostly natural products and finishes. "The other bathtubs are cast iron," she says. "Although I wanted as little drywall as possible, I think it's more practical not to do logs in the bathroom."

The snow-capped mountains in the distance create the perfect wintertime seeting.

Plenty of outdoor seating areas allow the Smiths to take in the surrounding mountain views.
