This integrated process means better quality at affordable prices.White pine logs are harvested during the winter when the sap is down, minimizing blue stain fungi growth. The logs are cut into 6-by-8-inch cants, the center of which is heartwood, the most decay-resistant part of the log that also acts as a deterrent for through-checking. The cants are gently air dried for at least six months to reduce moisture content. Just prior to delivery to the customer’s building site, the cants are milled into 7 1/2-inch-wide by 5 1/2-inch-high logs with double tongue-and-groove interlocking surfaces. These logs are then graded by the Timber Products Inspection system. Mountaineer Log and Siding Company’s unique and exclusive Weather Lok system was developed to prevent air and water infiltration around windows and doors. This system, in combination with other Mountaineer sealing features, makes the finished home one of the most energy-efficient in the industry.
