When it comes to decorating walls, log-home owners have a definite advantage over those living in conventional houses—in most rooms, the beauty of stacked logs negates the blank-canvas dilemma. But most log homes have at least a little drywall that's begging to be jazzed up.
You needn't blow a whole paycheck on artwork to make your walls pop, though. My secret for finding fresh, original, affordable art is the online handmade-goods marketplace Etsy. It's full of up-and-coming artists peddling their wares at amazing prices—I particularly like the graphic prints, which are rendered on frame-worthy art paper and cost less than a dinner out. These three wordy examples will make a bold splash on a white sea of drywall.
| Kidding Around "Play nice." "Eat your vegetables." "Wash behind your ears." They're the phrases parents find themselves saying so much that they just seem to roll off the tongue. If you're tired of dishing out a daily reminder, though (and are on the hunt for kid-friendly decor), artist John W. Golden's "By Order of Management" series is just the ticket. He's taken several popular parental phrases and repurposed them as lighthearted vintage-y signs. Next time you want your kids to share their toys, all you'll have to do is point. $20 to $60 each. | Calming Influence In trying times like these, we could all use a little motivation from time to time to stay the course. And what better reminder than a piece of propaganda from another, even more trying time? This "Keep Calm and Carry On print is a remake of a British poster that was created at the start of World War II, designed to soothe the battered psyches of the nation's citizens. It was never officially issued, but when it was unearthed from archives more than 50 years later, it became an instant classic for a new stressed-out generation. Cut & Paste Print has reproduced the slogan in a variety of colors, but I'm partial to the faded, down-to-earth tones of this version, which both evoke the print's history and blend seamlessly with log-home aesthetics. $18 each. | Life Is Beautiful Sometimes the simplest turns of phrase have the greatest impact—you'll never forget those "Got Milk? commercials, right? The same holds true for Papermoth Illustration's "Love Life print—both the sentiment and the design are far from flowery. But just like the Scandinavian-esque trio of hearts is all that's required to perfectly embellish the stark white text, these two words are all you need to remember the many reasons why life is worth living. $18 to $35.
