You are no longer limited to, Pine and White Cedar, for your log railing. Now, Cow Creek Cedar Company offers a dowel or milled log from Rocky Mountain Juniper. This aromatic cedar is known for its long lasting quality. In the late 1800’s ranches started using it for fence posts, many are still in fence lines today. Some, are still in the ground, 100 years later. Proof, that Rocky Mountain Juniper may be the best log to use for outdoor railing on log and log style homes.
The USDA Forest Products Wood Handbook states that untreated cedar will resist decay. It also says that pine will only last 7-10 years even when sealed, in outdoor use.
These logs have a lot of red color to them, turning to dark brown, to give them a different look than the typical log railing. The milling process of the small diameter Juniper leaves a lot of seam, or edge of the tree, which produces a log with a lot of character. Some may call it aromatic cedar or red cedar, but the cedar that grows in western South Dakota is “Rocky Mountain Juniper“.
