| Although the kitchen seems modest, its counters pack a one-of-a-kind visual punch, courtesy of locally mined garnet stone. "It has little red sparkles in it that match the cabinets' maroonborder," says John. "It's kind of cool." Also cool are the home's other unexpected touches, including reclaimed-bleacher flooring and the radiant heat beneath it. |

| Initially intent on going with a natural product, John and Evelyn couldn't be happier with their handsome manufactured-stone hearth. "It was maybe a third of the price of real stone," says Evelyn, "and it took less than half the time to construct." |

| The comfy furnishings in the master bedroom were purchased well before the family moved in. "We didn't want the house to be done and then have to start buying furniture," says Evelyn, "because we figured it'd be months before we had enough stuff in there to use it." |
