Shopping Tips for Finding High-Quality Cabinetry Six ways to test the quality of cabinetry before you make a purchase |
No matter what type of cabinetry you settle on, you’ll want to know that you’re purchasing a quality product. To walk away with the best cabinets you can buy, go through these 6 steps before you sign on the dotted line.
1: Open and close drawers and cabinet doors. They should open smoothly and quietly.
2: Run your hand over the wood surface. If it’s not smooth (think bumps, nicks and splinters), look elsewhere.
3: Do not purchase cabinets without any backs. All of the cabinets should be finished and sealed, both front and back.
4: Make sure all corners (even the back ones) are reinforced for sturdy durability.
5: Check for staples, which can pull apart with use. Instead, opt for panels that have been glued or fastened with screws.
6: Ask a designer about the different wood types available. The majority of cabinets are made from hardwoods, such as maple, cherry, oak or birch, and each one has its advantages.

Look for real wood boxes and drawers, not allwood which is particle board. Look at drawers to see corners, you want tenoned corners not stapled or worse. Also high quality cabinets will have plywood shelves not paper covered particle board. Lastly quality upper cabinets have extra bracing for securing to the wall so hat you don't wake up with the dishes and cabinet crashing to the floor

You're buying for a log house... remember settling! The fixings for wall-hanging cabinets need to be very strongly braced across the top, as that's where your only screws will be going in.
