One of Henry Steiner's handcrafted slab tables with half-round benches is a perfect fit in the kitchen's narrow eating area. Nancy found it in the yard when she purchased the property and restored it to its intended place. The antique light fixture came from an old restaurant in Portland.

The doors on the wall cabinets that flank Henry's "found wood" over-window shelf are a later addition. Crafted from local logs, they blend in beautifully.

A built-in corner cabinet, crafted by John Steiner, pairs three half-log shelves with a cubby for storage. A serpentine root handle opens the cabinet's log-veneer door.

Now used as a guest room, one of the cabin's small bedrooms features gorgeous vertically stacked, round-log walls, exposed log rafters and an angled wide-plank batten ceiling—all aged to a warm honey brown.

The cabin's rear elevation combines horizontal notched logs, vertical chinked ones, and hand-hewn upper-level shingles. Homeowner Nancy Dougherty appreciates that the steep, cross-gabled roof is perfectly angled to let snow slide right off.

Many of Henry Steiner's 30 cabins still stand on the 140-acre property. George Frazer, who bought his Steiner cabin in 1960, recalls being told by neighbors that the home's back porch, which faces the Zigzag River, was originally considered the front entryway. Although the tin roofing is a later addition, the logs chinked with narrow wood strips, porch posts and purlins are all original.

I love your home. Thanks for sharing it with those of us who dream about owning one, some day!

I love vintage log cabins. We have always wanted one, even if
small but could not afford it at the time we had to move, so we
built a small board and batten, Kentucky-style horse barn and
moved in! It has a wavy tin roof, experimental and a first for
this area!.....There are logs inside, with vintage barnwood and
8" wide plank walls with dark stain, and the whole house looks
like a 200 year old cabin. We love it, but STILL want a log
cabin! There is just no substitute.

What a wonderful surprise to see these cabins on the front of a magazine on a magazine rack in the midwest. I thought they looked familiar, and was delighted to read they were from my home area. My father grew up in Zig Zag, and our family cabin has various qualities that the Steiner cabins have. My husband even recognized the cabin style, and he's from Iowa. We miss the mountain, and return every couple of years to visit. The girl may have left the mountain, and the cabin, but it will never leave her. I currently live in Iowa, with a very rustic cabin in southern Minnesota.

Having lived in Colton for several years, I've passed through Rhodi many times to the slopes of Mt. Hood. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

My Great Grandfather was Fred Steiner - Henry's brother. When I was growing up he would tell me many stories about how they came to Beavercreek, Oregon and stories about his brother Henry and the cabins.
