Editor’s Picks: Energy-Efficient Products

4 products to help you create a healthier, more efficient cabin
by Whitney Richardson

  1. Keep cool this summer by incorporating energy-efficient log cabin ceiling fans. The Haiku ceiling fan uses a minimalist design to provide quiet, dust-free air circulation and make it easy to clean. Finishes include bamboo in caramel or cocoa, or matrix composite in black or white. The company has released a new module that includes light-emitting diode (LED) lighting to help illuminate your cabin’s spaces as well. $825 for the matrix composite fan; $995 for the bamboo fan; additional $95 for the LED module.   2. Nothing can be more efficient than combining two functions into one product. Enter Tulikivi’s new W10 Heat Absorber water-heating system, which heats water for your cabin via a warm hearth. The system consists of a water-circulating heat exchanger that uses the heat retained from a Tulikivi double-walled log cabin fireplace to warm household water and other areas of the home. This product will be made available soon in North America. $1,000-$2,000, depending on fireplace model used and water capacity. (800-843-3473;
  3. Even when recycling is not readily available, you can still be a good practitioner with TrashCo’s Flings. These popup bins are easily transportable to provide recycling containers wherever needed. Choose between the original 13-gallon Flings bin, or the 6.5-gallon Home Recycle Bin, which can hold up to 30 cans and fits neatly under a counter or in a corner. $3.50-$4 for the original; $6 for a three-pack of Home Recycle Bins.   4. Part of becoming more energy efficient is regulating how much you’re consuming. Hunter Fan’s Universal Internet Thermostat allows you to control your home’s heating and cooling systems for your cabin remotely, such as turning off your systems when you’re not around or turning them back on remotely while you’re on your way there. This smart home technology is accessible through both a smartphone application or at $100. (888-830-1326;
