Link to inventory of cabins in Lehigh County, PennsylvaniaLehighcountylogcabintrail.org
If you're curious about old cabins, you'll delight in this site, which identifies 22 of them in Pennsylvania's Lehigh County (out of some 100 known to exist). These buildings range in age from the 1734 Shelter House on South Mountain behind Emmaus to numerous log houses from the 19th century scattered throughout Lehigh County. Some of the log buildings are owned, preserved and maintained by nonprofit organizations, others by municipalities and still others by private persons. Several have annual festivals associated with them as a means of celebrating and enjoying the lifestyles of the 18th and 19th centuries. The web site provides detailed descriptions of each cabin, including the year it is known or believed to have been built, and provides driving instructions that identify which cabins may be visited and which are drive-by only, and whether they may be photographed. Because the cabins are scattered all over the county, the site even organizes them into three regions to allow for day trips. Or you can take an armchair tour with excellent photos and detailed descriptions, all contained in a downloadable, printable field guide. The site's bonus value is its architectural history of the American log cabin, as well as a link to the National Park Service guide to preserving, restoring and maintaining old log buildings.
