Davis, West Virginia | Log Home Living's Best Places to Build | 2008

Davis, West Virginia, selected by Log Home Living as one of 2008's Best Places to Build a Log Home.

Population: 576

Land Prices in Davis: $79,900 buys a 2-acre lot with beautiful trees and easy access to skiing and state parks.

Why We Love It: In addition to the fact that America’s deceased polka king Frankie Yankovic hailed from Davis, we love it because it’s curled on the banks of the Blackwater River and because at 3,200-feet, it’s the highest township in the state, yielding blissful summer temperatures that rarely push past 80.

Cool temps in the summer also mean snow in the winter. Tucker County gets bountiful snowfalls—150 to 200 annual inches—so snow sports are huge. The Canaan Valley and Timberline Four Seasons resorts deliver downhill thrills, while Nordic shooshers and telemarkers can enjoy the terrain at White Grass, established on an old alpine ski hill.

The 900,000-plus acre Monongahela National Forest sprawls nearby (spelunking, anyone?) as does Blackwater Falls State Park, with a 5-story waterfall that ultimately surges through an 8-mile gorge. (The olive-colored Blackwater River received its name from the green tannins leaching from fallen spruce and hemlocks.)

Why You’ll Love It: A tiny year-round population. The soft, treed slopes of the Alleghenies. Outdoor recreation that ranges from whitewater rafting, mountain biking and backpacking to fishing, hunting and golf.

The woods here naturally embrace log homes. Mountain laurel blooms in spring, and the hardwoods flame crimson and orange in the fall. You’ll find that West Virginians like to say that their autumnal show rivals leaf peeping in New England.

Davis is tiny, but the town is working to gussy up its riverfront. There are some outdoor-oriented shops and cute B&Bs. And the Blackwater Brew Pub serves fresh ales amid live music.
