Falling for Fall | Planning Help Online
January 2008 | Log Home Living
by: Clare Martin

Tired of waiting for the gingko tree in your front yard to turn a brilliant shade of yellow? Hit the road and discover all autumn has to offer with the help of these online foliage resources.

foliagenetwork.com
As its name suggests, this site maintains a broad network of “foliage spotters” across the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest, who send in twice-weekly reports during high color season. There are also links to accommodations (primarily inns and Bed & Breakfasts) in each region, as well as suggestions for things to do when you’ve had your fill of leaf-gazing.

weather.com/activities/driving/fallfoliage
It’s no surprise that Weather.com’s fall foliage site is…well, all about weather. Regional, color-coded maps track the leaves’ peak throughout the season, and the “Fall Drives” link gives you average temperatures in foliage-friendly cities like Burlington, Vermont. There’s also a fairly impressive slideshow if you need an immediate fall fix.

gorp.away.com/gorp/features/fall/fall.htm
Gorp’s fall foliage page is super-easy to navigate, thanks to a straightforward format that lists related articles by region. In keeping with the site’s adventure-travel theme, you’ll find suggestions for great fall hikes and cycling trips, as well as information on secluded autumn getaways.

urbanext.uiuc.edu/fallcolor
This site, maintained by the University of Illinois Extension, is little more than a collection of links—but what a collection it is. It will connect you with state-specific color reports and events calendars, as well as fall-themed activities and photo galleries. There’s also a helpful chart that lists common tree types and the colors they turn.
