For many people, the suburbs—with their cookie-cutter homes, manicured lawns and neighbors within arm's reach—truly define the American Dream. But for Keith and Holly Rogers, subdivision life is simply where the dreaming began.
After growing up in the open air of nearby farms, the couple's traditional home outside Elizabethtown, Kentucky, made them feel cooped up. And it was hardly the ideal place for Holly's parade of pets: three geese, five ducks and four Labrador retrievers. "I call Holly the modern-day Ellie May Clampett," jokes Keith. "She'd have every critter under the sun living here if she could." So began the couple's search for the perfect piece of land—a place where they could build a log home reminiscent of the majestic lodges they'd stayed in during their honeymoon tour of the western United States. "Even before we met, each of us had always wanted to live in a log home," Holly explains. "We both have horses and love the outdoors," adds Keith. "A log home just kind of fits our nature." It took more than a year, but the Rogers finally fell in love with a hilltop lot overlooking the rolling countryside.
Interior Motives Within a month, the Rogers began working on a home design with George and Lisa Kaberlein of The Knot House, a local representative for Kuhns Bros. Log Homes. "We started out with our standard Elk Ridge model," says Lisa. "Then we played around until we got the design just right." Here are some of the unique design ideas that went into the Rogers' building project:
- an impressive 8-by-24-foot custom entryway
- exterior 8-by-8-inch Super Double Round logs
- an expansive deck that wraps around the great room with two covered porches
- a two-way exterior fireplace, which feeds from the great room chimney
- a private "dog cabin" entrance for their Labrador Retrievers
