To add interest to the great room, the Knaffs used a large, gnarled character log as part of the king-post truss system; the ceiling peaks at 25 feet. The couple decided on interior walls of drywall rather than log to avoid too much wood.

Smoky Mountain log home bathroom
A red oak vanity by Diamond has a light beige cultured marble top with double sinks. The brushed stainless faucets are the Moen Model 6101 Series; the plumbing fixtures are by Kohler. The bathroom's pale peach tile floors and light yellow walls create a soft, relaxing atmosphere. The couple used sliding doors to save space in the master bath.

Making meals is simple in the efficient kitchen, which provides enough workspace for the couple to make meals together. They bought the Diamond hickory cabinets with cathedral arched door panels and had their builder install them. They chose Silas stone for the countertops, partly because it requires less maintenance than granite. The breakfast bar has hickory bead board facing; above the bar is a chandelier from Wilson Lighting in Florida. The couple chose white GE appliances because Marilyn doesn't like how smudges show on many stainless appliances.

Smoky Mountain log home dining room
The Knaffs enjoy hosting dinner parties for up to 12 in their cozy dining area. The oak dining room table and painted black chairs are from Broyhill's Attic Treasures collection; the maple china cabinet is Canyon Creed from Broyhill. The corner curio cabinet, which is by Howard Miller, displays Marilyn's Hummel collection. The dining room chandelier is by Caton Classics, a division of Mariana Imports.

Smoky Mountain log home bedroom
The warmth of the cedar stained logs helps create an inviting bedroom sanctuary. The bedroom suite is from Broyhill's Yorkshire Market line. The green, gold and rose patchwork squares of the bedspread from J. C. Penney's offer a rich contrast to the master bedroom's pale green walls.

Above the kitchen breakfast bar, two colorful pendant lights from Quoizel Lamp Company beckon. In the corner is a three-drawer Hekman chest with rounded edges. The stairs to the lower level have log railings.

Jack faced the fireplace himself, and he and Marilyn made the silk floral arrangement on the mantel. The living room cocktail table with drop sides and the end tables are from the Yorkshire Market line by Broyhill The chairs are by La-Z-Boy.

Smoky Mountain log home deck
The log posts on the 10-by-36-foot deck cost more than plain wood posts, but the couple preferred the look. The decking is pine. The deck rocker is from Lowe's.

Smoky Mountain log home exterior
The home enjoys pastoral views of the Smoky Mountains. The truss in the front porch includes a misshapen character log to add interest. Originally the porch was open, but the couple later added railings for a more finished look. A concession to their age was a ramp rather than stairs to the front porch.

The Knaffs could have used wall logs as small as 8-inches, but say they chose 12-inch ones "for stability." The home's windows are Jeld-Wen Premium.

My wife and I have built the most unique log & timber home here in the smoky mountains. 6000 sf of luxury, unmatched by anything in any of the magazines we have seen. All the sub-contractors comment they have never seen a log & timber home like this. How can we get it into your magazine. Respectfully Mike & Ginger Carbone

I really enjoyed this story. My dream is about the same. I'm in Alabama on a 1200 ft bluff overlooking a lake. I love it and am planning on building a log home shortly. Just went to the Nashville Log & Timber show. I'm happy that you are happy. Best wishes to both of you. Really enjoyed the photos!
